About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Clear Ocean is a story-adjusted and character-focused ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald that reimagines the Hoenn adventure with Kanto influences, altered antagonists, and new protagonists. While the core Emerald structure remains intact, the hack shifts the narrative context and character roles to create a familiar yet distinct experience.

Currently released as Beta 1, Pokémon Clear Ocean is an early-stage project that emphasizes story experimentation rather than mechanical overhauls, making it especially interesting for players who enjoy alternate timelines and crossover-style narratives.

Story Overview

Pokémon Clear Ocean is set in Hoenn months before the Pokémon World Tournament (PWT). Although the foundation of the story follows Pokémon Emerald, major narrative changes reshape the region’s conflicts and characters.

Instead of Team Aqua and Team Magma, Team Rocket emerges as the primary antagonist operating in Hoenn. The original Emerald protagonists are replaced by new main characters—Konshu, Kumiko, and Takashi—while familiar figures such as Wallace and Brendan appear throughout the storyline.

As a major twist, iconic trainers Red, Leaf, Blue, and Ethan serve as the final bosses, tying Kanto and Johto legends directly into Hoenn’s altered timeline.

Key Features

  • Kanto Starters: The initial starter Pokémon selection is based on Kanto instead of Hoenn.
  • Protagonist Swap: Original Emerald protagonists are replaced with new characters and Kanto-based representations.
  • Team Rocket Antagonists: Team Rocket replaces Team Aqua and Team Magma as the main villainous organization.
  • Crossover Boss Battles: Red, Leaf, Blue, and Ethan appear as late-game or final boss opponents.

  • Altered Narrative Timeline: The story is positioned before the Pokémon World Tournament, changing character motivations and events.
