About This ROM Hack
Pokémon FireRed +Plus (Orange) is a GBA ROM hack that expands the classic FireRed adventure by replacing the Sevii Islands with the Orange Islands from the Pokémon anime. This hack blends familiar Kanto gameplay with brand-new content, including unique challenges, puzzles, and story elements inspired by Ash’s anime journey. Players experience a fully fleshed-out Orange League, new Gym mechanics, cameo appearances of memorable Pokémon from the anime, and a revamped storyline involving Team Rocket and legendary Pokémon.
The hack is designed to preserve the core FireRed mechanics while offering fresh exploration, unique battles, and new story-driven content for players seeking an alternative post-Elite Four experience.
Story Overview
After defeating the Elite Four, Professor Oak sends the player to retrieve the GS Ball, echoing Ash’s anime adventure. Upon docking in Valencia, the player visits Professor Ivy’s lab. However, Team Rocket strikes, defeating the professor and stealing the GS Ball. Ivy warns the player of “abnormal Pokémon” before sending them off in pursuit.
The journey continues to Mikan Island, where progression is blocked until defeating Gym Leader Cissy in a 2-on-2 dual match. Each Orange League Gym Leader fights with a team of six Pokémon in dual matches, using two types simultaneously. The Orange Crew Champion has no type restrictions and fights in a full 6-on-6 dual match.
Cameo appearances from anime Pokémon, including Crystal Onix and Pink Rhyhorn, enhance nostalgia. Team Rocket uses “altered” Pokémon for additional challenge. While not all islands from the anime are included, the content adds a substantial and enjoyable Orange Islands post-game experience.
The story also involves Team Rocket mining gold and silver on Mandarin Island as a cover for searching for Lugia and Ho-Oh, adding depth to the post-game narrative.
