About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Refined Crystal is a reimagining of Pokémon Crystal that focuses on one main idea: making Johto feel more diverse and meaningful by reshuffling its entire Pokémon ecosystem.

Instead of changing the story or adding new regions, this hack takes the original Gen 2 world and rebuilds how Pokémon appear throughout it. The goal is simple but impactful: remove repetitive encounters and fully highlight Gen 2 Pokémon and their related species lines.

The creator describes it as a “Johto without Gen 1 filler,” where the region is redesigned so that every area better reflects the uniqueness of Generation 2 Pokémon. Early routes are no longer filled with common Gen 1 encounters, and instead feature a more curated selection of Johto-native and related Pokémon.

Despite these changes, the hack stays grounded in the original Crystal experience, keeping the full storyline intact—from Gym progression to the Kanto post-game and final battle with Red.

The result is a version of Crystal that feels familiar but noticeably more focused, especially in terms of encounter variety and team-building options.

Key Features

  • Generation II–Focused Pokédex: All 100 Generation II Pokémon (and closely related evolutions) are obtainable, with encounters redistributed across Johto for variety and balance.
  • No Gen 1 Filler Encounters: Common Gen 1 Pokémon have been removed from most routes, ensuring Johto feels distinct and fresh.
  • Complete Crystal Experience: Players can defeat the Elite Four, explore Kanto, and battle Red, just like in the original game.
  • Reworked Trainer Teams: Gym Leaders and trainers now use more appropriate and interesting lineups, such as Falkner no longer relying on Pidgey.
  • Preserved Gen 2 Mechanics: All original Pokémon Crystal mechanics, systems, and balance philosophies remain intact.
  • New In-Game Trades: Additional NPC trades have been added or relocated to improve accessibility.
  • Starters in the Wild: Johto starter Pokémon can now be found naturally during exploration.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Celebi uses an incorrect overworld sprite (Jynx), causing unintended movement behavior
  • Some Pokémon-trading NPCs in Kanto are missing or relocated to Johto
  • Minor inconsistencies due to the project’s early-development nature
