About This ROM Hack
Refined Platinum is a comprehensive enhancement of Pokemon Platinum, designed to improve gameplay, expand content, and revitalize both the main game and postgame experience. The hack focuses on accessibility, variety, and player choice while retaining the identity of the original game.
Key improvements include enhanced wild Pokémon diversity, complete National Dex access in postgame, revamped trainer rematches, mini-quests, and reactivation of previously unused content. Trainers now feature both abilities, a long-standing bug fixed thanks to community collaboration.
Two versions are available: Coarse, a purist version maintaining near-vanilla gameplay, and Overhaul, which includes trainer buffs, updated movepools, and enhanced difficulty while staying balanced for the average player.
Refined Platinum preserves Platinum’s charm while offering deeper engagement, more strategic encounters, and richer postgame exploration.
Story Overview
The storyline follows the classic Pokemon Platinum adventure through Sinnoh. While the main story is unchanged, the postgame introduces mini-quests and challenges:
- Post-Stark Mini-Quest: Investigate the making and destruction of the Red Chain after defeating Dialga and Palkia.
- Superboss Mini-Quest: Challenge Kanto and Sinnoh’s strongest trainers, including Galactic Commanders, for postgame progression and National Dex completion.
- Revitalized Content: Events such as Rotom, Darkrai, Shaymin, and the Regi Chambers are fully implemented.
Players can now infinitely rebattle legendaries, explore previously dead content, and enjoy enhanced world-building with added flavor text, character interactions, and in-game lore.
Key Features
- Expanded Wild Pokémon Diversity: Improved encounter tables including version-exclusives and Pokémon normally locked behind RNG.
- Complete National Dex Access: Every G4 Pokémon is obtainable in postgame without altering main game progression.
- Trade Evolutions Fixed: All trade evolutions now work correctly.
- Enhanced Postgame Shops: TM, berry, and evolution item stores make postgame gameplay more convenient.
- Trainer Rematches: Rematches for Battlegrounds and postgame trainers have been substantially improved.
- Mini-Quests: Includes Red Chain storyline and post-Stark Superbosses for strategic and challenging postgame content.
- Revitalized Dead Content: Dual-slot mode in Celestic Town, Rotom, Darkrai, Shaymin events, and Regi Chambers restored.
- Trainer Abilities Fixed: Trainers can now have either Ability A or B, correcting a long-standing Platinum bug.
- No Stat or Type Changes: Preserves original Platinum stats, types, and abilities; no Fairy type included.
Coarse Version Features:
- Maintains a purist approach for players seeking vanilla experience with enhanced National Dex access and postgame content.
- Minimal movepool changes to match HGSS parity.
Overhaul Version Features:
- Trainer buffs for increased difficulty without unbalancing gameplay.
- Team Galactic and other key trainer teams redesigned for more engaging battles.
- Movepool updates to improve Pokémon options while remaining legal as of HGSS.
- IV scaling for trainers, enhanced battle strategies, and token level-up move buffs.
Known Bugs & Issues
- Emulator Compatibility: Only apply patches to Platinum v1.1 (Rev 1). v1.0 or other regions are not compatible.
- Bug Reports: Users should report issues only on current versions (v6.2) via Discord.
- Gameplay Bugs: Minimal, but some postgame events may require careful progression; no major type, stat, or ability glitches are present.
